Patient, Eye Surgery

 Cataract Surgery
Modern cataract has become extremely successful thanks to new technological advances in today's equipment and techniques. The vast majority of all cataract surgery today is done using an extra-capsular technique. Our ophthalmologist will perform the entire procedure from beginning to end, and the operating surgeon sees you personally on each visit during the post-operative healing time. We feel it is the responsibility of the ophthalmologist to care for you on an individual basis and that the doctor-patient relationship is a sacred and important aspect to the practice of medicine.

What Is a Cataract? A cataract is an opacity, or cloudiness, on the normally transparent lens inside of your eye. As a cataract forms, the lens of your eye becomes opaque and light cannot easily be transmitted into the retina. Cataracts happen to everyone, regardless of age and, like gray hair, are part of the normal aging process. With new and advanced surgical techniques, we are able to successfully treat up to 97% of cataract cases.

 Laser Vision Surgery
Laser refractive surgery is an exciting alternative for people whose sporting, leisure, occupational, or lifestyles choices are compromised by their dependence on glasses of contact lenses. This surgery is used to correct near-sightedness, far-sightedness, and astigmatic vision problems.

Having realistic expectations is critical. Laser vision correction is used to significantly reduce or eliminate the dependence on glasses and contacts, but there is no guarantee that you will not have to use some form of eye wear for such tasks as night driving or to obtain your best possible vision. Most or all patients will eventually need glasses for reading as they develop the natural ageing process of the eye known as presbyopia.

 The Surgical Procedure
Eye surgery is usually performed at the University Eye Surgery Center™ and is performed on an outpatient basis. During the procedure an eyelid retainer is used to prevent blinking and anesthetic drops are used to numb the eyes. The patient is asked to focus on a blinking red light throughout the procedure in order to center the treatment, and it is not uncommon for patients to move their eyes during the procedure, though we encourage the patients to remain as still as possible for the short amount of time the procedure takes. The laser can be precisely activated or deactivated in a fraction of a second by the doctor.
