Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need to have cataract surgery?

The decision to have cataract surgery is personal and should be based on your own lifestyle.  When you find that your cloudy vision is interfering with the things that you need to see, such as driving, reading, or working you may make the choice to have surgery.  There is no right time, good time or bad time to have cataract surgery.  In almost all cases, the results of the surgery will be the same no matter when you have surgery.

How do you treat glaucoma?

Glaucoma can be treated with eye drops, laser treatments or surgery.  Eye drops are very commonly used to lower eye pressure.  There are a wide variety of drops used which vary in price and dosing schedules.  Laser procedures can also treat many cases of glaucoma without the unpleasant side effects of some eye drops.  Surgery is usually reserved for more severe cases of glaucoma that cannot be controlled with eye
drops or lasers.

Does insurance pay for eyelid surgery?

Since drooping eyelids interfere with the field of vision and diminish the amount of light entering the eye, most insurance companies will cover eyelid surgery.  The field of vision must be measured, the eyelids taped up and the test repeated.  If this demonstrates at least a certain degree of loss it may meet the insurance company’s requirements for the surgery to
be paid for.

Am I a candidate for Lasik surgery?

If you are over 21 years of age, wear glasses to see at distance, have otherwise healthy eyes and have not had a change in your prescription for at least 6 months, you may be a candidate for Lasik.  More specific testing can be done in the office to further determine if you are a candidate.

Does the quality of lenses in my glasses affect how I see?

Absolutely!  Especially with no-line bifocals.  There is a dramatic difference between brands of progressive lenses in relation to the quality of transition from distance to near.  Many people who have tried no-line bifocals have failed to become comfortable wearing them due to brand and fit.
