Medical Eye Exam

This is a comprehensive, thorough medical examination of the eye.  Visual acuity, pupil reaction, eye muscles, and confrontation fields are checked.  Eyes are measured for glasses.  Eye pressure is checked and the pupils are dilated.  Dr. Croley examines the inner and outer eye.

Glaucoma is a disease of the eye characterized by damage to the optic nerve fibers caused by an increase in eye pressure.  Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the United States but loss of sight can usually be prevented with close, frequent monitoring.  In addition to measuring intra-ocular pressure, our office offers state-of-the-art testing which can detect the first signs of glaucoma damage.

• OCT - Ocular Coherence Tomography measures the thickness of the optic nerve tissue to detect the earliest signs of thinning due to glaucoma.
   
• Visual Fields - Visual Field testing maps out the field of vision.  Glaucoma causes specifically shaped defects in the field of vision which can indicate loss of vision.
   
• Ocular Blood Flow - Ocular Blood Flow measures the health of the blood flowing into the eye.  It is felt that people with low ocular blood flow are at higher risk for glaucoma damage.
   
• SLT - Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty is a “cold” laser that makes very small openings in the trabecular meshwork of the eye to drain fluid.  This helps lower eye pressure and in many cases can effectively treat glaucoma without medication.
